Abstract

This qualitative study sought to investigate the improved animal waste management strategies among farmers in Kermanshah province. Using purposeful and snowball sampling, farmers with extensive experience who owned a large number of livestock participated in the study. Data was collected using focus group interview and direct observation. Grounded theory approach was used to analyze data. Results revealed that animal waste in the study region is mainly caused by inappropriate herd production, poor nutritional programming, weak maintenance, and nature of animal species. Overall, herdsmen used animal waste as a source of soil nutrient, handicraft, animal bedding, selling, propelling insects, and dumping. It is recommended that instead of dumping, farmers can use biological modification in waste products in order to produce biogas and compost.
